Onam is a ten-day-long harvest festival celebrated in Kerala. This auspicious occasion marks the return of King Mahabali to the state. Thiruvonam is the last day of the ten-day celebration that includes activities such as Vallam Kali or boat races, Pookkalam – flower rangoli, Pulikali or tiger dance, Vadamvali which is a Tug of war, and Kummattikali, a mask dance.
Students of class VIII celebrated Onam with a warm welcome by the student emcee; a prayer, Bible reading, and the News reporting of the day’s headlines. This was followed by a play ‘The Divine Encounter of Mahabali and Vamana’ which showcased the origins of the legend of Onam and the importance of celebrating it every year.
The Middle School Choir regaled the audience with a melodious musical rendition. The Principal of St. Mary’s Public School enlightened the audience with a speech on the positivity and joy of celebrating a festival that brings people together.Primary, Middle, and High school students enthusiastically participated in creating various Pookkalam – flower rangoli. They competed in group divisions according to the schoolhouses – St. Thomas, St. Peters, St. Gregorious, and St. Mary’s. The school premises looked magnificent as it was adorned with Pookkalam all around.
The Onam festivities in St. Mary’s Public School brought a sense of togetherness and a zeal for celebration. It spread joy and warmth to everyone’s hearts, as such a wonderful festival always does.
