Citizen science workshop by Nuvedo.
The students of Std IX, St. Mary’s public school attended the Mushroom cultivation workshop on 24/11/2023 at Loyola Technology Center,
St. Joseph’s boys’ high school.
Ms. Prithvi gave the students an insight about the daily use of fungi in our life and busted a few myths.
It was followed by Mr. Jashid who shared many interesting facts about fungi a what exactly is a Mushroom. The students also learnt about the cultivation of mushrooms that they grow on agri waste which is usually burnt, water efficient and no waste is produced. Students were also made aware of the sources of nutrition for mushrooms and the fungal needs. Lastly, they learnt the scientific names and process of mushroom growth in each step. They had hands-on experience of inoculation. They were instructed about the dos and don’ts of growing mushrooms. Mr. Jashid’s clear step by step instructions helped them perform the activity properly. They were also encouraged to come up with new questions during the session which made it lively and interactive. After the session, the students spoke to the team who encouraged them to contact them through their email and send them the pictures of their harvest.The students are currently following the steps to grow mushrooms and hoping for a good harvest. All found the hands-on experience amazing as it helped them to understand the importance of fungi better.
