On August 21st, students of St. Mary’s Public School participated in the celebration of International Homeless Animals Day. International Homeless Animals Day was created in 1992 by the International Society for Animal Rights, aimed at finding homes for cats and dogs abandoned on the streets. Since then, the day has been observed in more than 85 countries.
The day was celebrated in our school to encourage the students to have compassionate towards homeless animals. Various activities, including feeding and caring for homeless animals were conducted to mark this day . The day’s focus was to raise awareness about the issues faced by homeless animals and to instil a sense of responsibility in our students towards these vulnerable creatures. As part of the celebration, students were encouraged to feed homeless animals and capture the moment through photographs, which they then shared with their class teacher.
Students of Std V participated eagerly in this activity. They were told to do the activity at home the previous day and then share the photos or videos with their class teacher. Armed with food, water, and a spirit of kindness, they ventured into their neighbourhoods and local parks, seeking out homeless animals in need of care. The students’ photographs captured touching moments—dogs wagging their tails in appreciation, cats enjoying a meal, and even birds being fed crumbs. These images were not only a testament to the students’ compassion but also served as a visual reminder of the importance of taking action to support animals in need.
Upon returning to school the next day, students shared their experiences, discussing their interactions with the animals and reflecting on the emotions they felt during the activity. The students thoroughly enjoyed the activities and loved spending time with animals. The celebration of International Homeless Animals Day at St. Mary’s Public School was a success, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of our students. As educators, we are proud to see our students embody the values of kindness and empathy, and we hope that this experience will inspire them to continue making a positive impact in their communities.
