“Young Minds Lead the Charge Against Plastic Pollution at Times NIE News Makers Meet 2024-25”

On November 6, 2024, students from St. Mary’s Public School had the remarkable opportunity to attend the Times NIE News Makers Meet 2024-25 at BGS World School in Bengaluru. Umayra Zakir, Syeda Rida, and Rhyda M of our school joined the like-minded young leaders to explore the pressing environmental issues. Organized in collaboration with the Karnataka Pollution Control Board and Siyona’s Little Wise Trust, the event was dedicated to educating young minds about the harmful effects of plastic usage and discovering ways to combat plastic pollution.

The session was both informative and engaging. Various speakers presented detailed insights into the hazards of plastic, shedding light on how pervasive plastic waste has become and its long-lasting impact on the environment. Students were not only given an understanding of the problem but also introduced to practical, attainable solutions that could be implemented to curb plastic waste, particularly in school environments.

One unique aspect of the program was a mock journalism session, where students played the role of journalists, questioning the dignitaries present. This interactive component allowed them to clarify doubts, engage directly with experts, and gain first-hand real-world journalism experience. Many students enthusiastically participated, receiving answers that deepened their understanding and inspired their commitment towards safeguarding mother earth.

The event concluded with refreshments, leaving students motivated and better informed about environmental responsibility. The inspiring meeting equipped these young environmentalists with both the knowledge and the drive to implement plastic waste reduction strategies in their respective schools and communities.
