On January 13th, 2025, St. Mary’s Public School celebrated the vibrant festival of Makar Sankranti with great enthusiasm. The school organized various activities to mark the occasion, and a special event for students of classes 6 and 8 was the Fruit and Vegetable Carving inter house Competition. This fun and creative competition added a unique touch to the celebrations, while promoting the values of sustainability, artistry, and cultural awareness.
Makar Sankranti is a significant festival in India, marking the harvest season and the transition of the sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn. It is a time of joy and festivity, celebrated with kite flying, bonfires, and with special delicacies being prepared
The aim was to engage students in an activity that combines creativity with sustainability, as they used fruits and vegetables to craft intricate designs and artistic sculptures. The students were used all variety of fruits and vegetables such as pumpkins, carrots, melons, and cucumbers, and were given the freedom to carve them into beautiful decorative pieces. This activity not only helped students develop their artistic skills but also raised awareness about the use of natural, healthy ingredients in food art.
The students displayed remarkable imagination and skill as they turned simple fruits and vegetables into stunning works of art. Some students created traditional motifs related to Makar Sankranti, such as sun patterns, kites, and harvest-related themes, while others focused on abstract and creative designs.
The competition was judged based on creativity, precision, and the overall aesthetic quality of the carvings. The judges were impressed by the talent and originality shown by the students. Several participants stood out with their unique designs, and the winners were announced during a small ceremony at the end of the day. Prizes were awarded to the top performers in both classes, and all participants were appreciated for their efforts in making the event a success.
