On December 5, 2024, St. Mary’s Public School observed World Soil Day, joining global efforts to raise awareness about the importance of soil conservation and sustainable land management. This day, celebrated annually, highlights the essential role soil plays in supporting life on Earth, providing nourishment, and maintaining biodiversity. In line with this year’s theme, “Soils: Where Food Begins,” the school organized a series of activities to engage students in understanding the vital connection between healthy soils and food security.

The celebration began with an informative session in which the importance of soil was discussed. Teachers explained how soil is not only crucial for growing food but also for maintaining ecosystems, supporting plant growth, and helping combat climate change through carbon storage. Students were encouraged to think critically about the challenges faced by soil health and what actions can be taken to protect it.

The posters communicated several critical messages, which were healthy soil is the foundation of agriculture, and without it, we cannot grow the food needed to sustain the world’s population, Soil erosion, pollution, and desertification are growing problems that threaten agricultural productivity and the environment, Sustainable practices, such as crop rotation, reducing the use of harmful chemicals and planting trees are vital for soil health .

The students used a variety of materials, from paints to coloured pencils, to create vibrant and informative posters. The aim was to allow students to express their understanding of soil conservation through creative artwork.

The World Soil Day celebration at St. Mary’s Public School was held to, foster awareness and educate students about the importance of soil in sustaining life on Earth. The poster-making competition proved to be an effective tool for students to express their ideas creatively while reinforcing the urgent need to protect and conserve soil for future generations. Through such events, the school has contributed to raising awareness about the critical issues surrounding soil health, food security, and environmental sustainability.
